d700 not sharp?

I’ve heard rumours that alot of people are running into problems with the d700 not being as sharp as they would expect. I’m not too sure about that problem. And let me tell you why.

Everytime I’ve upgraded to a more ‘pro’ type equipment I’ve had to spend a month or so adjusting my technique. I found that the more pro end, the less forgivable the equipment was with my sloppy technique. It happened when I went from the d70 to the d200. It happened when I went from a 70-300 5.6 lens to the 70-200 2.8 (and a 1.7tc). I happened again with the d200 to the d700. So every time I upgrade I end up spending some time upgrading my technique too.

That being said, if your d700 isn’t as sharp as you expect there are a couple things you can do.

1. Take it back (my first d200 had a rear focusing problem)
2. Reset it. The submenu for fine tuning to a specific lens might be screwing up your sharpness.
3. Ensure adequate shutterspeed by controlling aperture and ISO before you decide to take it back.
4. Test in controlled conditions.

I personally do not find my d700 less or more sharp than the d200. It is less forgiving of my mistakes though.

October 13, 2008 - 9:00 pm Betty Jane Allen - I really enjoy shooting with my brand new Nikon D-700. And yes, it is always delivering tack sharp pictures. Check menu settings to make sure in-camera "sharpening" is above norm for better results. Best regards, Betty J

March 17, 2009 - 9:12 am axel muench - Hi, let me tell you my story.. I am a long time Canon user and changed over from the Canon 50D to the Nikon D700 for various reasons. I bought a number of lenses for the Nikon. Specifically the Nikkor 80-200. And one day I tried to shot a small animal and all pictures were out of focus. I went to Nikon Bangkok and they told me the 80-200 does not work with the D700 hmm.. I returned the lens and got a bit worked up about sharpness. I own a 50mm 1.4 which is supposed to be 'tack sharp'. I tested it with a focus chart and believe there are no back or front focus issues. Anyhow when I try to shot simple stills of flowers etc using a tripod I expect something 'sharp'. But it's not! I have to increase aperture to 8 or so and then I get something useful. I am not a pro and so user errors are not out of the question but I have the feeling that something is wrong. Can it be that some D700 have sharpness problems? Or do I need a macro lens to achieve what I want? With the Canon 50D and a 24-105L lens the sharpness is ok. What dod I do wrong?? Thank you!! Axel

October 25, 2009 - 4:21 pm Big Eddie - Sooo... it's not just my D700 then, anyway, I know what the problem is... it's the VR facility on the lens. Turn the bloody thing off an you should get sharper pics.... this is no joke btw.
